Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute

The Central Library of the Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute (IGFRI) was established in alignment with the Institute’s vision and mission to promote knowledge through the effective dissemination of scientific and technical information. The Institute has a dedicated Library on Grassland & Forage crops which possesses a vast collection of literature on Agricultural Biotechnology, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Extension, Agronomy & Crop Science, Plant Breeding & Genetics, and Seed Science.

As the primary Learning Resource Centre of the Institute, the IGFRI Library supports the research, training, and information needs of scientists, scholars, staff, trainees, and visitors. The library is governed by the Library Advisory Committee (LAC) under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Director of IGFRI.

Opening Hours

The library remains open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on regular working days (Monday to Friday). It remains closed on Saturdays, Sundays and other Gazette holidays.

KOHA OPAC / WebOPAC

The library provides a round-the-clock Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)/WebOPAC facility to students, faculty and staff through the KOHA Library Management System (local access: http://192.168.10.130:8080/jspui). The database is searchable by standard bibliographic criteria such as author, title, subject, keyword etc.

One Nation One Subscription (ONOS)

ONOS includes journals from 30 major international publishers. A unified portal (https://www.onos.gov.in/) allows participating institutions to access 13,000+ peer-reviewed full-text journals covering diverse disciplines including science, engineering, medicine, social sciences, humanities and natural sciences.

DSpace-based Institutional Repository

The library maintains an online repository of IGFRI research publications, annual reports, and technical bulletins accessible at http://192.168.10.130:8080/jspui

  • Barcode-based technology for issue and return of library materials
  • Koha Open Source ILMS for library automation
  • Remote access to resources
  • Access to CeRA (Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture), KrishiKosh (ICAR repository) and ONOS

Sections and Facilities

  • Acquisition Section – Procurement of books, government documents and other material relevant to IGFRI’s domains. Faculty and scientists receive assistance in selection.
  • Technical Section – Classification and cataloguing (UDC classification) for easy retrieval via Koha OPAC.
  • Circulation Section – Issue/return of documents, subscription of newspapers, membership and lending services. Issue/return facilitated through barcode technology.
  • Periodicals Section – Maintains scientific journals, bulletins, reports and magazines.
  • Thesis & Reports Section – Houses M.Sc. dissertations, Ph.D. theses and project reports; contributions are uploaded to ICAR and institutional repositories.
  • Reference Section – Encyclopedias, dictionaries, maps, handbooks, atlases and reference books related to grass and fodder.

Access to Library

  • All staff members (RA, SRA, Young Professionals) of the Institute are eligible to use library facilities.
  • Books are issued after enrolment as a member of the library.
  • Outside research workers from other Institutes / SAUs may use the library with prior permission; however, books are not issued to them.
  • Every person entering the library must sign the register at the gate as a token of acceptance of library rules.
  • Books are issued to users as per entitlements.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Publications taken out on loan are subject to check by the person on duty.
  • All umbrellas, hats, sticks, bags etc. should be left at the provided place.
  • Only notebooks and pens/pencils are allowed inside the library.
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited in the library.
  • No marking, underlining, dog-earing or damage to publications is permitted.
